Have you noticed more people getting ill_ There mi

Oh, how glorious a British summer can be! The warmth and the sunshine are really something… But there’s no denying that for some of our fellow countrymen this time of year might actually be the sickest season. Recovering from ailments now could mean you’re back in fighting shape just in time for the stormy weather to arrive. What’s behind the increase in summertime sickness? Dr. Allen Haddrell shared some insights with the Daily Mirror. First, he pointed out that we should expect viruses to be circulating more this time of year, just like we expect to see leaves turning gold and crimson in the fall.

Another thing that could increase the spread of viruses is the air conditioning in offices. Some offices turn into saunas during the summer, roasting the people inside. To cope with the rising temperatures, people fan themselves or retreat to the (relatively) cool bubble of a refrigeration unit—be it a portable fan, a boxy window unit, or a central air conditioning system that runs through the ductwork of the office. A July article in The Atlantic pointed out that A/C can actually be bad for public health, and a more recent article in The Atlantic went into even more detail.

If you suspect that you’ve contracted COVID-19, there could be a reason for that. Dr. Paul Hunter explained that decreasing vaccination rates have left many people with scant immunity to the virus. Those who didn’t get COVID last winter may be particularly vulnerable. So, as you’re taking in the admittedly few good days of British summer, remember: it’s not just the sun that you’re bringing to yourself; it’s also a kind of self-care, in case you feel like you’ve been neglected. And if you happen to get sick, it just might be a sign of a more unfortunate trend.
